2020 was hands down the hardest year of my life. But it was also the year of the most spiritual growth I’ve ever experienced. I grew in my walk with Christ and learned things about my Savior I never dreamed. But in order for something, or someone, to grow, it has to first die in some form or fashion.
You may have to die to old habits. Overspending, overeating, or gambling. You may have to die to your cravings, your addictions. Alcohol, cigarettes, and excess sugar. And in my case, I had to die to myself. A long and painful process, I assure you. But it was worth it. And here’s why.
Growing Into the Person God Created You to Be
John 12:24 AMP “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone [just one grain, never more]. But if it dies, it produces much grain and yields a harvest.
If you think about an apple seed, or any seed for that matter, everything that that seeds needs is already inside of it. It just has to come out so that the seed can grow. For an apple seed to become an apple tree, it must transform. And transformation includes going into the dark for a season, being buried, and then breaking. Only then can that new life emerge from inside of it.
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
But in order for the new that’s on the inside to come to the outside, as I’ve already stated, the seed has to transform.
Transformation Requires Change
Romans 12:2 NIV “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
In the same way that a seed must be transformed in order to grow into what God intended it to be all along, a tree, so must we submit to God and His transforming work within us. And transformation begins by renewing our minds to God’s truths. Christ is within us, as believers and doers of His Word. The Bible. And God’s Word has a lot to say about our identity in Him. Who we are in Christ.
Christ is within us. And we are within Him. And because He is within us, we have authority. We have salvation. We have protection. And we have a responsibility. A responsibility to share these truths with the world.
Who We Are in Christ
One of the most powerful things I learned this past year was who I was in Christ. And that made all the difference. So who are we in Christ? Who are you and who am I?
I am CHOSEN. 1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”
I am FORGIVEN. Ephesians 1:7 “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.”
I am LOVED. Colossians 3:12 “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience…”
I am REDEEMED. Galatians 3:13 “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”
I am COMPLETE. Colossians 2:10 “So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.”
I am JUSTIFIED. Romans 5:1 “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ…”
I am a NEW CREATION. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
I am HOLY. 1 Peter 1:15-16 “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” and Ephesians 1:4 “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.”
I am STRONG. Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
I am A CHILD OF LIGHT. Ephesians 5:8 “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.”
I am HIS WORKMANSHIP. Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
I am an OVERCOMER. Revelation 12:11 NKJ “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.”
My Identity in Christ Changes Everything
When you know who you are and whose you are, it changes everything. I discovered who I am in Christ, and that knowledge changed my perspective and changed how I was living life.
Prior to fully comprehending who I am in Christ, I didn’t act it. How could I? If you’re royalty but you don’t know it, how can someone expect you to act like it?
As a followers of Jesus Christ, you are royalty. You are a chosen priesthood; holy and beloved. You are righteous, you are redeemed, you are justified, and you are forgiven.
And you are a joint heir with Christ. Romans 8:17 “And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.”
Once you know that, you can now walk in that identity. Own it.
